Jala is an online translation platform (the “Services”) operated by Jala Pte. Ltd. (“Jala”, “we”, “us”, or “our”). When you visit our website (“Website”) and use our Services, you trust us with your personal information. The Services enable our Users to, among other things, upload and translate content, communicate with other Users in the Jala community.

In this Privacy Policy, we seek to explain to you in the clearest way possible what information we collect, how we use it and what rights you have in relation to it. If there are any terms in this Privacy Policy that you do not agree with, please discontinue use of our Website and our Services.

Personal information is often, but not exclusively, provided to us when you sign up for and use the Services, send us an email, participate in our activities (events, competitions, or giveaways) or communicate with us in any other way.

  • Registration information. You need to register for a Jala account to use our Services. When you register for an account, you will be asked to provide certain basic information, such as your name, email address, organisation name, password, location, and educational background.

  • Social Media Login Data. We provide you with the option to register using social media account details, like your Facebook account. If you choose to register in this way, we will collect the Information described in the section called "Third Party Logins" below.

All personal information that you provide to us must be true, complete and accurate, and you must notify us of any changes to such personal information.

(ii) Automatically collected information: We automatically collect certain information when you visit, use or navigate our Website. This information does not reveal your specific identity (like your name or contact information) but may include device and usage information, such as your IP address, browser and device characteristics, operating system, language preferences, referring URLs, device name, country, location, information about how and when you use our Services and other technical information. This information is primarily needed to maintain the security and operation of our Services, and for our internal analytics and reporting purposes. Our Website offers you the ability to register and login using your third party social media account details (like your Facebook or Twitter logins). Where you choose to do this, we will receive certain profile information about you from your social media provider. The profile information we receive may vary depending on the social media provider concerned, but will often include your name, e-mail address, friends list, profile picture as well as other information you choose to make public.

We will use the information we receive only for the purposes that are described in this Privacy Policy or that are otherwise made clear to you on the Website. Please note that we do not control, and are not responsible for, other uses of your personal information by your third party social media provider. Our servers and office are located in Singapore, so your information may be transferred to, stored, or processed in Singapore or the United States by our third-party service providers. While the data protection, privacy, and other laws of Singapore and the United States might not be as comprehensive as those in your country, we have implemented appropriate administrative, technical and organisational security measures to protect the security of any personal information we process. This includes, signed Data Processing Agreements between Jala and our third-party service providers (available on request), as well as the use of SSL technology to encrypt data during transmission through public internet. We also employ application-layer security features to further anonymize personal information.

However, please also remember that we cannot guarantee that the internet itself is 100% secure. Although we will do our best to protect your personal information, transmission of personal information to and from our Website is at your own risk. You should only access the services within a secure environment.


We will only keep your personal information for as long as it is necessary for the purposes set out in this Privacy Policy, unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law (such as tax, accounting or other legal requirements). No purpose in this policy will require us keeping your personal information for longer than 2 years past the termination of the user’s account.

When we have no ongoing legitimate business needs to process your personal information, we will either delete or anonymize it, or, if this is not possible (for example, because your personal information has been stored in backup archives), then we will securely store your personal information and isolate it from any further processing until deletion is possible.


We do not knowingly solicit data from or market to anyone under 18 years of age.   • Similarly, if personal information is collected or processed on the basis of consent, the data subject can withdraw their consent at any time. Withdrawing your consent will not affect the lawfulness of any processing we conducted prior to your withdrawal, nor will it affect processing of your personal information conducted in reliance on lawful processing grounds other than consent.

No uniform technology and standard for recognising and implementing DNT signals has been finalised. As such, we do not currently respond to DNT browser signals or any other mechanism that automatically communciated your choice not to be tracked online. If a standard for online tracking is adopted that we must follow in the future, we will inform you about that practice in a revised version of this Privacy Policy.


Under California Law, California residents have the right to request in writing from businesses with whom they have an established business relationship, (a) a list of the categories of personal information, such as name, email, and mailing address, and the type of services provided to the customer that a business has disclosed to third parties (including affiliates that are separate legal entities) during the immediately preceding calendar year for the third-parties’ direct marketing purposes, and (b) the names and addresses of all such third parties.
